The Smokies’ Ryan Flaherty and Robert Whitenack were named the Southern League player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for the week of May 16th through May 22nd. These are the first league awards in 2011 for the Smokies.
Through May 23, Flaherty leads the Southern League 46 RBI, and ranks second in homeruns with 10. Flaherty, who is currently riding a seven game hitting streak, went 10-for-22 with 2 homeruns and 11 RBI for the week. The Portland, ME native was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 1st round (41st overall) of the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
After being sent up to Tennessee on April 27, Whitenack has made his mark in the Smokies pitching rotation. He is currently 4-0 with a 2.57 ERA in six starts. In the past week, he is 1-0 with eight strikeouts in two starts. The North Massapequa, NY native was selected by the Cubs in the eighth round of the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
