Mick Gillispie Returns to Chicago Cubs Spring Training Broadcasts for 2012

Earlier today the Chicago Cubs announced that Tennessee Smokies radio broadcaster Mick Gillispie will once again team up with Cubs television voice Len Kasper for audio webcasts of Cubs spring training games on Cubs.com. Len and Mick will provide play-by-play for 20 Cubs games this spring as the club prepares for the 2012 season.

This will be the third straight season that Gillispie has provided play-by-play of Cubs spring training games  and his second working with Kasper on cubs.com.  Kasper is entering his eighth season as the television voice of the Cubs on WGN-TV and CSN-Chicago after working for three years as the play-by-play voice of the Florida Marlins on Fox Sports Net.

CHICAGO – For the second season in a row, most Chicago Cubs spring training games will be available to Cubs fans via television, radio or internet radio broadcast as the club today announced its 2012 spring training broadcast schedule.

In total, a Cubs game will be available every day of the spring schedule via one or more broadcast mediums, and 30 of the 35 games are scheduled to be available to Cubs fans overall.

The 2012 broadcast schedule will feature six games televised by Cubs broadcast partners (four by WGN and two by Comcast SportsNet), 10 on the WGN Cubs radio network and 20 via internet radio broadcast on www.cubs.com.  Fans will be able to access the Cubs Webcasts on Cubs.com and MLB.com for free by registering for a log-in account with the website.

WGN Radio will broadcast three of Chicago’s first four games of the spring – Monday, March 5 vs. Oakland; Tuesday, March 6 vs. Colorado; and Wednesday, March 7 at Kansas City. 

The first televised spring game will be Saturday, March 10 when the Cubs travel to play the Milwaukee Brewers on WGN.  Comcast SportsNet’s first game will be Thursday, March 22 at Texas. 

Cubs TV play-by-play announcer Len Kasper will once again join Mick Gillispie, radio broadcaster for Chicago’s Double-A Tennessee affiliate, for most of the cubs.com internet radio broadcasts.  Gillispie is entering his sixth season as the voice of the Tennessee Smokies and in 2010 was named the Southern League Broadcaster of the Year.  The Cubs first game of the spring will be available on cubs.com on Sunday, March 4 vs. the Oakland Athletics in Mesa.

The Smokies Radio Network is the official radio network for the Chicago Cubs AA affiliate, the Tennessee Smokies. Daily broadcasts begin with the Pilot-Oscar Mayer pre-game show airing 15 minutes before every game. Following the game the broadcast concludes with the Edward Jones Investments post-game show. The Smokies Radio Network staff includes the Director of Broadcasting Mick Gillispie, Sr. Broadcast Assistant Greg Young, Broadcast Assistant Keith Brake and Broadcast Intern James Rowe.
