KODAK, Tenn. – The Tennessee Smokies took a 3-2 lead into the ninth inning but were unable to hold on and fell to the Mobile BayBears in 10 innings Saturday night, 4-3. The loss, in front of 6,236 at Smokies Park, drops Tennessee to 30-32 in the second half, 65-67 overall. The BayBears improve to 27-35, 67-65.
Tennessee scored first when Logan Watkins a solo home run off Mobile starter Derek Eitel to give the Smokies a 1-0 after one inning.
The BayBears took the lead when Brent Cleven homered off Tennessee starter Nick Struck in the second and Alfredo Marte drove in Evan Frey in the third inning to give Mobile a 2-1 lead.
The Smokies answered right back in their third inning. With two outs, Justin Bour walked and moved to second on a Junior Lake single. Both runners rushed home on Rubi Silva’s triple to give Tennessee a 3-2 advantage.
Struck exited the game after seven innings allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits while fanning six. Zac Rosscup entered the game in the eighth and allowed one hit and handed the ball over to Tennessee closer Frank Batista in the ninth.
Mobile tied the game up at three with Clevlen’s second home run of the night, a solo shot to deep center off Batista (BS, 3).
The BayBears would strike in extras when Marte reached on a throwing error on Lake to lead off the inning and scored three batters later on Matt Mangini’s double put Mobile ahead 4-3
Casey Harman (0-4) suffered the loss allowing the one unearned run in the tenth, while Bo Schultz (2-3) earned the win for Mobile in relief.
The Smokies and BayBears will play the middle game of their five-game set on Sunday evening at 5:00 at Smokies Park. Tennessee will send lefty Eric Jokisch (7-2, 2.90) to the mound and Mobile will counter with southpaw David Holmburg (4-5, 3.90). Sunday is Beach Party Night with postgame concert featuring Knoxville-based Homemade Wine. The Smokies will also be auctioning off their alternate game-worn baby blue jerseys during the game.
