Southern League Recap: 8/2

Pensacola 16, Birmingham 8

A back-and-forth affair took place at Regions Field in Birmingham as the Barons hosted the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. After a Dan Black home run for Birmingham, Pensacola answered quickly. A five-spot in the 3rd inning was capped off with a Donald Lutz three-run, two-out home run. A Cody Puckett home run in the bottom of the 3rd cut the Blue Wahoos lead to 5-2. Birmingham answered with five runs of their own in the 4th inning to take a 7-5 lead. Pensacola responded with 11 runs in the last five innings to take the victory. Blue Wahoos reliever Chris Manno tallied his third victory of the season, while Barons reliever J.R. Ballinger was handed his first loss of 2013.

Tonight’s starters: PNS: Daniel Renken (5-7, 3.37) BIR: Stephen McCray (9-7, 3.49)

Mississippi 13, Huntsville 2

Tommy La Stella tied the Mississippi Braves’ franchise record with a 20-game hitting streak on his solo home run in the top of the 1st inning at Joe Davis Stadium. After that, the Braves offensive floodgates opened up. Runs in the first five innings including a Christian Marrero homer in the second, his seventh of the season. Jason Rogers continued his hot hitting for Huntsville, hitting his 19th home run of the season. Mississippi starter Aaron Northcraft picked up his sixth win of the season, while Stars starter Drew Gagnon fell to 4-6.

Tonight’s starters: MIS: Gus Schlosser (6-3, 2.45)  HVL: Andy Moye (5-11, 4.25).

Montgomery 7, Chattanooga 0

After two and a half scoreless innings, the Biscuits lit up a six-spot on the scoreboard at Riverwalk Stadium en route to a x-x win over the Lookouts. Mikie Mahtook, Kyenog Kang and Curt Casali all hit two-run singles in the inning to put the Biscuits up 6-0. A Shawn O’Malley single in the 6th pushed the lead to 7-0. Victor Mateo picked up the win for Montgomery and Andres Santiago took the loss for Chattanooga.

Tonight’s starters: CHA: Duke von Schamann (2-4, 4.59) MTG: Marquis Fleming (2-5, 4.92) starts on the bump for Montgomery.

Mobile 5, Jackson 1

Diamondbacks top prospect Archie Bradley threw a complete-game for the Baybears, allowing just one run on six hits and striking out seven. James Gillheeney recorded the loss for Jackson. Runs in the 1st, 5th, 6th and 8th for Mobile secured the victory for Bradley. Jackson’s lone run came in the 8th as Gabriel Noriega doubled to score Michael Dowd.

Tonight’s starters: JXN: Roenis Elias (6-9, 3.01) MOB: Andrew Chafin (7-6, 2.82)
