MLB.com today revealed the top ten shortstop prospects in the game, with 2013 Tennessee Smokies infielder Javier Baez named as the second best player at that position. Baez trailed only Boston Red Sox SS Xander Bogaerts in the rankings, which can be viewed by clicking here.
During his time in Kodak, Baez accumulated a .294 average (64-218), blasting 20 homers and driving in 54 RBI in 54 contests for the Smokies after being transferred to Tennessee from High-A Daytona on July 6. The 21-year-old was also named to the Southern League Postseason All-Star Team for his efforts.
Baez smacked a combined total of 37 roundtrippers between Tennessee and Daytona, which tied for second among all Minor Leaguers during the 2013 season. Only Low-A Hickory INF Joey Gallo launched more longballs in that time frame.
Following the 2013 campaign, Baez was also ranked by MLB.com as the top prospect in the Chicago Cubs organization, as well as ninth-best overall.
