On June 13, 1912, Christy Mathewson became the eighth pitcher in Major League history to win 300 games, and the first to win all 300 games in the twentieth century. The two-time Triple Crown winning right-hander was one of the game’s first true superstars, dominating the National League, leading the Senior Circuit in strikeouts and ERA five times each and winning the World Series in 1905. Before he ever became that superstar, though, Mathewson had to make a dramatic alteration to his game – adding what’s now known as a screwball to his arsenal – reinventing baseball’s image along the way.
Mick Gillispie told the story during the sixth inning of Tennessee’s game with the Mississippi Braves Friday night.
