Smokies Radio Network reporter Meagan Wood goes behind the scenes with Chattanooga Lookouts All-Stars, Darnell Sweeney and Chris Reed, to discuss their journey to success while grinding through the Dodgers farm system.
Infielder Darnell Sweeney was a 13th round pick for the Dodgers in 2012. In two years, Sweeney climbed his way to 19th best prospect in the Dodgers organization according to Baseball America’s 2014 prospect list. During spring training, Sweeney saw more playing time with the Dodgers than any other prospect in the minors. (Nine more games that any other Dodgers player in the minor leagues.) Sweeney was elected to the 2014 Southern League All-Star game.
LHP Chris Reed was a first round pick in the 2011 MLB draft. Before the 2014 season, Reed was ranked the 8th best prospect for the Dodgers organization by Baseball America. Reed has compiled a 3.00 ERA after 90 innings pitched (currently leading the league in strikeouts at 86 K’s). He was among the Double-A honorees for the 2014 Southern League All-Star game. Reed was born in London, England and in turn represented Team Great Britain in Germany during qualifications for the 2013 World Baseball Classic. He was a reliever at Stanford University but decided to return to his former role as a starter before the 2011 MLB draft.
