The Smokies struggled all night against Birmingham’s pitching as they fall tonight in game one of the series here at Region’s Field by a score of 6-0.
The Barons got off to a quick start as they plated three runs in the bottom of the first to make it 3-0. Trayce Thompson got on base with a one-out walk and proceeded to steal second base. Dan Black showed patience as he received a walk as well bringing up Rangel Ravelo who was in the midst of a 20-game hit streak. Ravelo ripped a single up the middle to score the first run of the ball game to make it a 1-0 ball game and extending his hit streak to 21-games. Kevan Smith followed with a walk, the third of the inning, setting up a bases loaded opportunity for Michael Earley. Earley grounded into a fielder’s choice to score the second run of the inning making it 2-0. Chris Curley came up next and got a infield hit scoring Ravelo to extend the lead to 3-0.
After not allowing a run since the first, the Barons were able to get a run off the long ball to make it 4-0. Kevan Smith, one of Birmingham’s representatives in the Southern League All-Star game this year in Chattanooga, blasted a two-out home run to extend the lead to 4-0.
In the eighth, the Barons added insurance runs as they scored two more runs as it would become a 6-0 game. Jared Mitchell lead off the inning with a double and later scored on a Black one-out single to make it 5-0. Black advanced to second on the throw. Ravelo followed suit with another base hit sending Black to third and Smith singled bringing in the sixth run of the game for the Barons and extending the lead to 6-0.
