The Tennessee Smokies had another frustrating night at the plate as they fell to the Birmingham Barons 13-3.
The Smokies got off to an immediate lead by plating two runs for an early 2-0 lead. Elliot Soto lead off with a walk and Stephen Bruno followed with an RBI double to the warning track scoring Soto for the first run of the game and a 1-0 lead. Bruno advanced on a Dustin Geiger ground out and scored on an opposite field single from Charlie Cutler to make it 2-0.
The Barons responded back by putting three runs on the board to take a 3-2 lead. Jared Mitchell and Trayce Thompson worked back-to-back walks to lead off the bottom of the first and advanced up a base on a one-out wild pitch setting the stage for Josh Richmond who followed with a two-run double to left to tie the game 2-2. Chris Curley followed suit by ripping a double to plate Richmond putting the Barons up 3-2.
In the bottom of the fourth, Birmingham broke open the score putting seven runs on the board to make it 10-2. Richmond led off the inning with a single and Curley singled in the next at bat and Jeremy Farrell reached base on a fielding error by Matt Loosen for a bases loaded opportunity for Martin Medina who was hit by a pitch to force in a run to make it 4-2. Jaime Pedroza came up next and worked a walk to bring in Curley extending the lead to 5-2. Loosen allowed another run on a wild pitch giving the Barons a 7-2 lead. Thompson made it a 8-2 ball game by hitting a single to left scoring Pedroza. After a Dan Black fly out, Rangel Ravelo extended his hit streak to 22 games with a two-run home run to left to make it 10-2.
In the fifth, Birmingham extended the lead even more with three runs making it 13-2. Curley led off the inning with a single and scored on a double by Farrell as it became 11-2. Medina followed suit with a double of his own to make it 12-2. After Pedroza grounded out, Medina advanced to third and scored on a sacrifice fly from Mitchell to extend the lead to 13-2.
In the ninth, the Smokies were able to score a run as they cut the deficit to 13-3. Taylor Davis led off the inning with a single to left and advanced to second a wild pitch. Pin-Chieh Chen walked and Jae-Hoon Ha grounded out to advance the runners to second and third. Kevin Brown walked setting up a bases loaded chance for Soto who proceeded to ground out, but scored Davis to make it 13-3.
