In an age where pitcher maintenance and arm fatigue are frequent concerns in baseball, it’s unthinkable for a player to pitch 300-plus innings or go a full nine innings on a routine basis, but that’s exactly what Robin Roberts did at his peak in the 1950s. On July 5, 1953, Roberts went the distance for the 28th consecutive start.
Mick Gillispie told the story of Roberts going the distance – and, in the case of July 5, above and beyond – during the sixth inning of Tennessee’s game with the Birmingham Barons on Saturday.
