On July 30, 1959, the seed for one of the most fearsome sluggers of the 60s and 70s was planted in the San Francisco Bay.

Mick Gillispie told the story of Willie McCovey’s sensational Major League debut during the sixth inning of Tennessee’s game with the Birmingham Barons on Wednesday.
