The begging question now is can the Smokies lose as last night they won their sixth straight game by a score of 7-1 against the Montgomery Biscuits. They now lead the series 2-0. Tonight, Tennessee has a chance at a seventh straight game won and to clinch the series with Montgomery as game three is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. ET.
Right from the start there was a sense that this game was won after some spectacular defensive plays, especially from Albert Almora, who arguably made the play of the year for the Smokies, was made. Addison Russell contributed with a home run and two RBIs as well as getting runs driven in by Christian Villanueva, Taylor Davis, Stephen Bruno, and Pin-Chieh Chen.
The win for Tennessee keeps them in first place by three games, but a resurgent Birmingham Barons have crawled back into second place as they won 6-5 on a walk-off bases loaded walk against the Chattanooga Lookouts.
The Smokies are expected to start RHP C.J. Edwards (1-1, 2.65) who is making his first appearance against Montgomery this season. In his last outing on August 14 against Huntsville he pitched six innings not allowing a run on four hits.
The Biscuits have yet to announce their starter, but it is expected to be RHP Albert Suarez (3-4, 3.66) who is also making his first appearance against Tennessee this season. In his last start on August 14 against Mississippi he pitched five innings allowing three earned runs on eight hits and earned the loss.
