It appears Cubs closer Carlos Marmol has thrown his last regular season pitch for the organization after news broke Tuesday that Marmol is likely to be traded before Opening Day.  Several teams are said to be interested in the young closer, with the Detroit Tigers being the most interested after the club allowed Jose Valverde to enter free agency this past offseason.

Marmol will earn nearly $10 million this season and can opt for free agency this coming offseason.  The Cubs closer can also veto a deal to four West Coast teams, but Marmol would likely waive the clause if he were traded to a contender.

Cubs starting pitcher Scott Feldman worked off the rust Tuesday during his second outing of spring training as he allowed four runs on six hits over 2-plus innings of work in the Cubs loss to the Rockies.

“If you’re going to have an outing like today, it’s a good thing to have it in spring and not the regular season,” Feldman said. “It’s an opportunity to kind of sit back and look at things and what I need to work on and make a little bit of adjustment. From where I am right now, second start of spring, I’m just happy I feel good and my fastball is where it needs to be.”

Cubs third baseman Ian Stewart, who is currently battling a left quad injury, did some light jogging on Tuesday and hopes to return to the Cubs’ lineup soon.  But the question is whether there will be a spot for Stewart to return to as Luis Valbuena has looked good during the spring, batting .417 and playing all around the infield.

“I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t a big question, because there just aren’t that many at-bats (once he returns)” manager Dale Sveum said. “You have to be very productive in those at-bats. (Luis) Valbuena has been playing and doing a really good job.”

Sveum said Stewart will probably get 20-to-30 Cactus League at-bats and will spend time at minor league camp to get extra at-bats.

With injuries to projected starters Matt Garza and Scott Baker, Cubs pitcher Carlos Villanueva spend roughly the first month of the season in the rotation.

“I’m kind of bummed out for Garza, knowing how he missed time last year at the end,” Villanueva said Monday. “It’s not the way you want to start the season.”

Villanueva, who signed with the Cubs this past offseason, has compiled 56 career starts with a 16-22 record and a 4.80 ERA.

Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo arrived for the World Baseball Classic with his Italian teammates Monday morning and hopes to “shock some people” as part of the Italian team.

“It’s going to be a nice challenge,” Rizzo said.  “Although it’s not USA, I think it will still be cool to participate in something like this.”

Jackson faced eight hitters in only two innings of work and allowed two hits on no runs while facing the Colorado Rockies Tuesday at Hohokam Stadium.

“It’s all mental. You keep the ball down and execute pitches,” Jackson said after the game.  “And everything is pretty good. I can have a lot of success if you keep the ball down in the zone.”

After Geovany Soto signed a one-year deal with the Texas Rangers in December, Welington Castillo became the favorite to land the Cubs’ catching spot for the 2013 season.  Castilo played in 52 games last season and left an impression on manager Dale Sveum by batting .265 with a .337 on-base percentage.

“It helps to come to spring training and know you have a job, but at the same time I don’t feel comfortable, just have to keep working hard and feel like I don’t have anything,” Castillo said after Monday’s Cactus League game against the Dodgers.

Versatility is the key for Brent Lillibridge’s chance at a roster position.

Lillibridge signed a minor league contract with the Cubs this past offseason after his 2012 campaign consisted of stops with the White Sox, Red Sox, and Indians.  With injuries and a lack of depth with the Cubs, manager Dale Sveum is trying out Lillibridge at every position.

I have been working my butt off all winter to be ready for an opportunity,” Lillibridge said.  “If I showcase what I can do, then it will be a no-brainer for them. If that happens, hopefully I will be in Chicago soon.”

Trade rumors instantly swirled late Sunday evening regarding a possible return to the Yankees for Soriano after Curtis Granderson was ruled out the first month of the season after suffering a fractured forearm in the Yankee’s Grapefruit League game against the Toronto Blue Jays.  Even with prior ties to the Yankees, it’s still unclear whether Soriano would be open to a return to the Bronx.

“I signed here to win and I prepared my mind from the first day I signed the contract to win the World Series here.…My dream is winning here,” Soriano said regarding feelings towards the Cubs.

Wells announced Monday that he will play out his current seven-year, $126 million contract with the Angels and will retire following 2014, citing his children and ownership opportunities as reasons for his impending retirement.

I’ve gone through this for long enough. My thoughts right now as a family is to be done after two years, enjoy [my children], get to be there for them in those years where they’re going to need their dad every day, not just every now and then,” Wells told reporters.

As for ownership opportunites, Wells said he and Tigers outfielder, and former teammate, Torri Hunter have discussed partnering up to own a Major League franchise.

“It’s definitely something we’re interested in doing once we’re both done playing,” Wells said. “Instead of playing fantasy GM, you’re actually putting together your own team and learning what it takes to pretty much make money in an organization, especially in the Minor Leagues.”

“To sit and count Garza out wouldn’t be the smartest thing to do. I want that competition,” Samardzija told reporters Tuesday.  “I want me and Garza and Edwin [Jackson] to go out and compete for that spot. It’s only going to make us better and build us as a core of the rotation.”

Samardzija was listed atop the Cubs’ depth chart headed into Spring Training, but the 28-year-old is looking for competition to push him this spring after his training partner Ryan Dempster was traded to the Texas Rangers in July and then signed with Boston this offseason.  The Cubs announced Tuesday that pitcher Matt Garza will be sat down for a week after an MRI revealed a mild lat strain on his left side.

“I know that God gave me [the ability to] hit,” Castro said on Tuesday. “That’s why when I went to the Dominican, I worked hard every day on my defense. I want to be like [Darwin] Barney and win a Gold Glove.

Castro committed 27 errors last season, the most among all shortstops in the National League, and ranked 10th in fielding percentage (.964).  Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney won his first Gold Glove last season after improving his defense with former infield coordinator Pat Listach.

“It’s one thing I challenged him to do,” said Cubs manager Dale Svuem.  “[I said] ‘Your next step now is to win a Gold Glove,’ and obviously that takes a lot of focus and hard work and being focused for 150 pitches a game and 162 games.”

Cubs’ Epstein says he’s pleased with progress of the organization.

“We feel great about where we are going. It was a huge year for the farm system and everything that happened behind the scenes,” said Epstein.  “We don’t want to keep talking about it. We can’t wait for the season to start so we can go out and do it so our prospects can continue to develop. I think we are going to surprise some people at the major-league level with the quality and depth of our pitching staff.

However, Epstein said if the major league club looks to be struggling half way through the season, things could “get ugly for the last couple of months.”

Cubs in-game programming director Jim Oboikowitch announced Tuesday the team will bring in less “A listers” and will instead focus on brining in those with Chicago ties.

“They should know something about the Cubs. They should know the background of Harry Caray and what we are doing, and I think it will be a little more teaching them and exposing them,” said Oboikowitch.

Baker gathered with media Monday as part of the Cactus League media day at Chase Field in Phoenix.  While Baker discussed the excitement surrounding his Cincinnati Reds team, he also admitted he views his four years in Chicago as a period he tries to forget.

“I’ve made (it) invisible, like that was a part of my life that never was,” Baker said. “When I get back to Chicago, then it hits me front and center. You know, in life you can make anything invisible, because if you don’t then, you know, some of the pain that you might have felt will always be there and you don’t need that.”

Baker told reporters he was not ready to go in 2006 after the Cubs did not renew his contract.

“At the time when I was sent out I wasn’t ready to go then. When I was there they quit spending money and they quit reloading,” he said. “Then right after I left they started spending money again.”

The Cubs new 125-acre spring training facility will resemble Wrigley Field and seat 15,000 fans.  The complex will have 70 percent of its seating in the shade, a large concourse with a party deck over left field and state-of-the-art weight and training rooms.

“It marks a new beginning,” Cubs CEO Tom Ricketts said last year.  ““The Chicago Cubs are a part of the City of Mesa and we look forward to being a good neighbor.”
