Goodbye Ernie Harwell

Baseball suffered a loss on Tuesday when former Detroit Tigers broadcaster Ernie Harwell passed away at the age of 92.

Harwell broadcast baseball for 55 years, with the last 42 of them in Detroit with his beloved Tigers. Harwell also broadcast for the Atlanta Crackers, Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Giants, and Baltimore Orioles.

All of us at the Smokies Radio Network loved hearing Harwell broadcast games and we mourn his loss. We will feature a radio story on the Hall-of-Fame broadcaster during the Mobile series during the Pilot-Oscar Meyer Pregame Show.

I first listened to Ernie broadcast Tiger Baseball, when I was about 6 years old. I listened to him on an old table top radio. I know I didn’t see baseball on a television, until I was much older. My Dad, my brother and myself would listen together. That was a wonderful time in my young life, a simplier, definately less stressful life. Ernie’s voice always has brought back a feeling of nostaliga to me. A feeling of family, enjoying the simple things in life. I will miss Ernie and his voice, that always has meant so much to me. He will never be replaced that is for sure.
