The Process: All-Star Edition

The Smokies last season sent a total of six all stars to the Southern League Mid-Season All Star Game. Kyle Hendricks was the starting pitcher for the North Division as he took the loss throwing 1.0 innings with 3 hits and giving up 2 earned runs. Alberto Cabrera pitched in relief throwing 1.0 innings with 0 hits and not giving up an earned run. Christian Villanueva, Matt Szczcur, and Arismendy Alcantara all started in the gamed for the North Division. Szczur and Alcantara both went 0-2 in the game as Villanueva went 0-3. Rafael Lopez pinch hit and stayed in the game as he went 0-1.

All the players that made the North Division all star team for the Smokies will be with the Chicago Cubs this spring training. Alcantara finished the season batting .271 with 15 home runs and 69 RBI’s, Rafael Lopez batted .247 with eight home runs and 43 RBI’s, Matt Szczur batted .281 with three home runs and 44 RBI’s, and Christian Villanueva batted .261 with 19 home runs and 72 RBI’s.

Alberto Cabrera finished his stint with the Smokies with a record of 9-3 and 3.20 ERA. He would later be promoted to AAA Iowa and later would make his major league debut with the Cubs in August. Kyle Hendricks had a sensational year as he was promoted too AAA Iowa after his stint with the Smokies, but while with the Smokies he went 10-3 with and 1.85 ERA.
