This Date in Baseball History – June 5

Mickey Mantle

Use of the phrase “hit one out of the park” in reference to a home run is more figurative in the Major Leagues than it might be at other levels of baseball because of the high-standing bleachers that surround ballparks in The Show. It took on a very literal context in Chicago – and an unpleasant one for one driver on 34th Street – when Mickey Mantle stepped to the plate at Comiskey Park on this date in 1955.

Mick Gillispie told the story in the sixth inning of Tennessee’s game with the Jacksonville Suns on Thursday.
