The Chicago Cubs announced Sunday afternoon a trade with the Atlanta Braves that in part sent 2014 Smokies reliever Arodys Vizcaino to Atlanta. The full details of the trade are below as tweeted out by the Cubs.
In 14 relief appearances with the Smokies this past season, the right-hander posted a 1-1 record and 2.63 ERA (4 ER in 13.2 IP), earning one save while finishing eight contests. The native of the Dominican Republic would go on to be promoted to the Iowa Cubs before finishing the 2014 campaign in Chicago. Over five appearances with the Cubs, Vizcaino compiled no record and 5.40 ERA (3 ER in 5.0 IP) with four strikeouts.
Tommy La Stella participated in 93 games with Atlanta this past year, recording a .251 average (80-319) with 22 runs scored, 16 doubles and 31 RBI. According to the Cubs, La Stella led all National League rookies in walks (36) and on-base percentage (.328). The left-handed hitter played in the Southern League with the Mississippi Braves in 2013, though he did not face the Smokies during his time in the circuit. La Stella flat-out raked over his 81 games with the MBraves, batting .343 (97-283) with 32 runs scored, 21 doubles, two triples, four homers and 41 RBI, in addition to 37 walks and a .422 on-base percentage.
The Coastal Carolina prospect came into the 2014 season as the Braves’ ninth-best farmhand according to Baseball America, and was selected by Atlanta in the eighth round of the 2011 MLB Draft out of Carolina.
For Vizcaino, it is the third time he has been traded in his professional career after signing with the New York Yankees as a non-drafted free agent in 2007. The Braves previously acquired him along with outfielder Melky Cabrera and reliever Mike Dunn from the Yankees in exchange for pitchers Javier Vazquez and Boone Logan on December 23, 2009. He would make his Major League debut with the Braves in 2001 before being dealt to the Cubs organization on July 30, 2012, along with righty Jaye Chapman in exchange for southpaw starter Paul Maholm and outfielder Reed Johnson.
