The Chicago Cubs announced Thursday that 2014 Tennessee Smokies pitcher C.J. Edwards has been added to the Major League club’s 40-Man Roster. Thursday was the final day to protect players who were previously not on the 40-man roster from being selected in next month’s Rule 5 Draft at the Winter Meetings in San Diego.
Edwards is coming off a strong Arizona Fall League campaign in which he posted a 1-0 record and 1.80 ERA (3 ER in 15.0 IP) over six starts, adding 13 strikeouts and a 1.07 WHIP. In ten starts with the Smokies this past season, the right-hander compiled a 1-2 record and 2.44 ERA (13 ER in 48.0 IP) in a year. The “String-Bean Slinger” missed the majority of the season due to a shoulder injury.
