Race to First in Southern League North

The Tennessee Smokies are looking to rally at home in the fifth game of a six-game series tonight against the Jackson Generals. In their current series, the Smokies and Generals are tied at two games apiece with an overall season record of 21 wins and 17 losses. The Cubs’ Double-A affiliate will try to bounce back tonight against the Generals at home as the Smokies are only two games back of the first place Chattanooga Lookouts.

According to MLB.com, the Chattanooga Lookouts have two top 20 prospects looking to go into the Major Leagues. Byron Buxton, a quick center fielder for the Lookouts with an even quicker and accurate swing, is the number one prospect for the Minnesota Twins as long as he stays healthy. The Outfielder has a .235 batting average for the Lookouts and 10 stolen bases. The Twins’ affiliate also carries third baseman Miguel Sano. He has 28 hits, 8 homeruns and 20 runs batted in. These two prospects are a major reason for the team’s success.

However, the Tennessee Smokies have top prospects like Kyle Schwarber who has nine home runs this season with a .327 batting average and a .445 on-base percentage. If Schwarber improves on his defensive capabilities as a catcher, he could very well make a major impact on making the Smokies the first place winners of the Southern League North Division. Although Kyle Schwarber, Dan Vogelbach and Willson Contreras are all very powerful hitters, the Smokies have not scored a run in their last 19 innings of play. Smokies fans hope to see the slump disappear tonight against the Generals. Also, the Smokies have four 4 errors this series and 43 errors in the 2015 season. Overall, the Smokies need a big improvement on defense and to pull out of their hitting slump to catch up to the Lookouts record of 23 wins and 15 losses.
