Walks prove costly in 10-2 loss Saturday night

By: Adam Kline

KODAK, Tenn. – For the third consecutive night, the Tennessee Smokies fell behind to the Montgomery Biscuits early in the game. Unfortunately, the Smokies bats fell silent too, as they were beat by a final score of 10-2 in front of a crowd of 4,587 at Smokies Park Saturday evening. The Smokies fall to 27-20 on the season’s second half, 61-55 overall.

Following a 58-minute pregame delay, the Biscuits (23-25, 60-58) started the scoring early, plating three runs in the first inning after Smokies starter Nick Struck issued walks to three of the first four batters. Cameron Seitzer hit a two-RBI single and then the next batter, Todd Glaesmann, hit a RBI-single to give the Biscuits a 3-0 lead.

With the Biscuits leading 4-0, the Smokies pushed a run across the plate in the fifth inning on a Matt Szczur base hit to score Christian Villanueva. Villanueva singled to center to begin the frame.

Montgomery tacked on six more runs in between the seventh and eighth innings, highlighted by a two-run home run by Curt Casali off reliever P.J. Francescon to give the Biscuits a 10-1 lead.

Tennessee scored a single run in the ninth when Nate Samson drew a pinch-hit walk and scored on a pinch-hit triple by Jonathan Mota.

Struck (0-1) took the loss allowing four runs on four hits, walking four and striking out two in his first start with the Smokies this season. A.J. Morris tossed three innings in relief, allowing five runs (two earned), striking out four. Francescon pitched the final two innings giving up the home run in the eighth.

Biscuits starter Jacob Thompson (11-9) went seven strong innings, giving up three hits, an unearned run, walked one and struck out four. He set down the Smokies in order in five of the seven innings he pitched.

Looking to bounce back, the Smokies send right-hander Matt Loosen (1-3, 7.48) to the mound to take on Biscuits southpaw Enny Romero (10-6, 2.72) on Sunday evening at 5:00 at Smokies Park.
