Mota’s Homer in 10th Carries Smokies Past Jackson, 5-3

JACKSON, Tenn. –  Jonathan Mota’s two-run homer in the top of the 10th inning lifted the Tennessee Smokies past the Jackson Generals, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon at Pringles Park. With the victory, the Smokies snapped a five-game skid and salvaged the final contest of the five-game series against their in-state rival.

With the Smokies playing an extra inning game for the second time in the past week, Justin Bour started a two-out rally in the top of the 10th with a free pass. Mota then smashed his second long ball of the season, taking a Carter Capps offering over the left field wall to put the Smokies on top, 5-3.

Capps (1-2) suffered the loss while Tennessee’s Marcus Hatley (1-1) worked the final three innings out of the bullpen, surrendering just one hit and striking out four without allowing a run to notch the victory. A trio of Tennessee relievers combined to fire 5.1 scoreless innings.

Mota finished the contest 3-for-5.

Just as they had in each of the first four games of the series, the Generals drew first blood. In the bottom of the fourth, Yohermny Chavez laced a leadoff homer to left to make it 1-0. Later in the frame, Eric Campbell walked and came plateward on a Gabriel Noriega RBI single to give the Generals a 2-0 edge.

The Smokies broke through with three runs in the top of the fifth to take their first lead of the series. A leadoff walk by Mike Burgess and a Jim Adduci single put runners on the corners with no outs for Mike Brenly, who got Tennessee on the board with an RBI single. An run-scoring groundout off the bat of Jae-Hoon Ha made it a 2-2 game and a Rebel Ridling RBI single gave the Smokies a 3-2 advantage.

That lead was short lived, however, as Jackson evened the score, 3-3, in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Chavez, which chased Tennessee starter Dae-Eun Rhee from the ballgame.

Rhee yielded three runs on six hits over 4.1 innings, walking four batters and fanning five, but did not factor in the decision. Generals starter Danny Hultzen, the second overall pick in last year’s draft, allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits in 4.2 frames.

The Smokies enjoy their first scheduled off day on Monday before returning home to Smokies Park on Tuesday night at 7:15 p.m. ET to begin a five-game set against the Montgomery Biscuits. Tennessee is slated to send southpaw Brooks Raley (1-1, 3.65 ERA) to the mound in the series opener.

Burgess’ Big Night Not Enough as Smokies fall to Generals

JACKSON, Tenn. –  Right fielder Mike Burgess doubled and homered, but the Tennessee Smokies (10-14) dropped their fifth straight contest, falling to the Jackson Generals, 6-4, on Saturday night at Pringles Park.

The Generals (17-7) used some clutch two-out hitting to build up a 3-0 lead. Jackson opened the scoring in the bottom of the third when Johermyn Chavez led off with a single and came plateward two batters later on a two-out RBI single off the bat of Francisco Martinez. Then in the fourth, Joe Dunigan lined a leadoff double to center and was tripled home by Chris Pettit to make it a 2-0 contest before Pettit scored on a Chavez RBI single to extend the Jackson advantage to 3-0.

The Smokies broke through against Brandon Maurer in the top of the fifth when Burgess deposited a two-run homer just over the left field wall to make it 3-2. Burgess’ third home run of the season followed a leadoff single by Matt Cerda, who was activated from the disabled list earlier in the day. Tennessee evened the score at 3-3 later in the frame when Jae-Hoon Ha singled home Mike Brenly, who had reached on a walk.

Jackson jumped back on top, 4-3, thanks to a Dunigan RBI single in the home half of the fifth.

Once Smokies starter Dallas Beeler left the game following the fifth inning, a pair of solo home runs extended Jackson’s lead to 6-3 as Chavez homered with two outs in the sixth and Dunigan connected on his league-leading seventh blast of the season in the seventh.

Burgess struck again in the top of the eighth, doubling home Justin Bour to cut the Smokies deficit to 6-4. That’s as close as Tennessee would come, however, as Stephen Pryor got the final five outs for Jackson to notch his sixth save of the season.

Maurer (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, going five innings and surrendering three runs on six hits. starter Beeler (0-1) suffered his first loss, yielding four runs on eight hits over five innings.

The Smokies and Generals conclude their five-game series on Sunday afternoon at 3:05 p.m. ET when Tennessee sends right-hander Dae-Eun Rhee (1-1, 5.73 ERA) to the mound against Jackson southpaw Danny Hultzen (2-2, 2.08 ERA)  at Pringles Park.

From Afghanistan to Smokies Park: Doc McGraw Returns Home

Dr. John McGraw. Photo Courtesy: Roger C. Hoover.

By Roger Hoover / Smokies Radio Network

A valued member of the Tennessee Smokies family is safe and sound this spring, happy to watch baseball from the home dugout instead of dealing with war abroad.

Dr. John McGraw, who has been the Smokies team physician for many years and lives and works in Jefferson City, recently completed a U.S. Army combat deployment to Afghanistan from mid-November 2011 to February of this year.

“It’s great to be back in East Tennessee, the most patriotic place in the United States of America,” McGraw said. “I’m just happy to be back and nobody shooting at me.”

McGraw and other Army physicians worked 90-day “boots on the ground” assignments, serving the forward operating base hospital in Afghanistan. While McGraw has had other combat deployments before in his military career, he said this was the most intense.

“This was a time as an orthopedic surgeon I was taking care of significant battle injuries,” said McGraw. “There were a lot of not only U.S. forces and NATO forces but a lot of Afghan soldiers were severely injured. Day, nights, weekends, holidays, the radio would go off and we would quickly put on some clothes and get to the hospital as quickly as possible and wait on the helicopters to land, bringing us the casualties from the battle front.

“There were three general surgeons who were trauma-trained as well as myself and an emergency room physician and often times we would literally be overwhelmed with the number of casualties. We had to do triage, take them in the order of priorities.

“We did have some casualties while I was there and that took a toll on our unit because these were friends, fellow soldiers. When those type of things happen, it does call into question exactly why you’re there. And the reason you’re there is to protect our freedom.”

With his deployment from November to February, “Doc” McGraw missed being at home for the holidays with his family in Tennessee.  He had missed some holidays before because of his military service, yet this stretch included: Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s plus the birthdays of himself and his wife Ann.

“It was different in that we worked all day Christmas day, but we took time out to spend a little time with each other,” McGraw said. “One of our soldiers had somehow gotten a live Christmas tree shipped in from the states. So we decorated that and we tried as best we could to enjoy a little bit of the Christmas season.”

When McGraw got to Afghanistan he noticed that there were several posters on the walls of the hospital and base from celebrities and thought that maybe the Chicago Cubs would send a poster or two. He called on his friend Chicago Cubs Vice President of Player Personnel Oneri Fleita about the poster, and was surprised when he opened the package from Wrigley Field.

Dr. McGraw's unit with the Cubs "W" flag that flew over Wrigley Field last September. Photo Courtesy: Dr. John McGraw.

“To my great delight not only did they send us posters, but t-shirts, caps, and they sent us the white “W” flag that flew over Wrigley Field on September 7,” McGraw said. “It came at a time right before Christmas when we had really been working diligently in the operating room day and night for a long period of time, we were down. That lifted out spirits.”

In addition to the Cubs, the Smokies reached out to McGraw with a YouTube video from the entire front office wishing him and the troops a Merry Christmas.

“I appreciate Mick Gillispie, Brian Cox, Doug Kirchhofer, really the whole organization,” McGraw said. “Really appreciated the fact that they were praying for me and doing what I needed at the time to let me know that they appreciated my service.

At the end of February, McGraw left the Middle East to return to the United States where he out processed at Fort Benning in Georgia before making it back home to East Tennessee.

“It was overwhelming,” McGraw stated about coming home. “For about two weeks my emotions were so high and so volatile that I had to just be calm, de-stress, and fortunately the laws give you time to get back into the swing of things before you go back to work and that was important.”

McGraw will be at Smokies Park as much as he can during the 2012 season, assisting team trainer A.J. Larson and watching baseball from his spot in the home dugout. While he loves the game, there are now two moments each night that Doc McGraw has an added appreciation for after his combat deployment.

“Each night at Smokies Park we sing the national anthem, but we go above and beyond that here,” McGraw said. “At the seventh inning stretch, someone sings ‘God Bless America.’

“This is the most patriotic park in the Southern League, and I really appreciate the Tennessee Smokies.”
