This Date in Baseball History – June 27

Don Zimmer

On June 27, 2000, while managing the New York Yankees, Joe Torre got into an argument with an umpire and was ejected from a ballgame. In the same inning, Yankees bench coach and former Smokies player and manager Don Zimmer got a piece of the umpire, too, and joined an exclusive club in the process.

Mick Gillispie told the story of Zimmer’s ejection that day and the two Hall of Fame managers he joined in that club during the sixth inning of the Smokies’ game with the Jackson Generals on Friday.
