The Smokies offense regained life yesterday as they scored nine runs in their 9-1 victory over the Birmingham Barons and put themselves back in first place in the North Division by 0.5 games. Still trailing the series 2-1, Tennessee looks to even the series as the scheduled start for the game is at 8:05 p.m. ET.
The Smokies turned it around after scoring three runs in the first two games of the series as they put together nine runs in yesterday’s contest. Outfielder Jorge Soler, who played in his first game since coming off the disabled list, added with to the scoring with a home run and two RBIs. Dustin Geiger contributed with three RBIs and Pin-Chieh Chen chipped in with two. Corey Black pitched incredibly as he allowed one run on three hits in six innings pitched.
Tennessee is expected to start RHP Pierce Johnson (2-1, 3.44). This will be Johnson’s third appearance against the Barons this season as he has pitched 10 innings allowing six earned runs on seven hits while striking out 14. In his last start against Montgomery on July 2 he pitched 7.1 innings not allowing a run on a hit and struck out five.
Birmingham looks to counter with RHP Myles Jaye (0-7, 6.93) who is also facing the Smokies for the third time this year as he pitched seven innings allowing nine earned runs on nine hits and earning two losses. In his last start on July 2 against Chattanooga, Jaye struggled as he pitched five innings allowing six runs on nine hits.
