Pineyro Allows Seven Runs in Smokies Loss

MONTGOMERY, Ala., – Tennessee starter Ivan Pineyro gave up seven earned runs over two and 2/3 innings while losing a second inning three run lead and the Smokies lost to the Biscuits 8-4 on Thursday night at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery.

Pineyro gave up a two-run home run to Richie Shaffer in the second and a two-run single to Shaffer in the third. Shaffer was 2-for-4 with four runs batted in for the Biscuits in the victory.

The Biscuits fell behind 3-0 after Tennessee rallied for three runs and four hits in the second inning.

Cameron Seitzer started their comeback with a leadoff double in the second and Shaffer followed with a home run to deep left. The homer was his 15th of the year and cut the Tennessee lead to 3-2.

Pineyro allowed two runs and two hits in the second and would stay in for the third. Montgomery rallied for five runs in the third and would knock Tennessee’s starter out of the game.

The five run Montgomery third started with a lead off single from Willie Argo. Ryan Brett followed with a walk and a single to right by Kes Carter would load the bases for Taylor Motter. Motter brought in one with a sacrifice fly and the Biscuits tied the game 3-3.

Shaffer later added a two run single to break the tie and Luke Maile would drive in two as well with a double to left.

The Biscuits scored five times on four hits in the third and took a 7-3 lead. Pineyro left the inning after allowing all five runs to score. Tony Zych finished the inning after throwing one pitch and getting Leonardo Reginatto to ground into a double play.

Victor Mateo started for the Biscuits and after allowing three runs in the second would go on to hold the Smokies to just one other run in the game.

Mateo allowed four runs, with three earned, over six innings and earned the win. Mateo walked one and struck out two in the victory.

Tennnessee did score first in the loss. They rallied for three runs and four hits in the second and originally led 3-0.

Christian Villanueva started the rally with a one-out single off Mateo. Charlie Cutler also singled and a hit to left-center by Stephen Bruno one batter later scored Villanueva. Dustin Geiger scored the second Tennessee run with a ground out to second and a single by Jae-Hoon Ha broubght in the third.

Both sides traded sacrifice flies in the fifth and sixth. Hector Guevara brought in an unearned run in the fifth with a sacrifice fly for Montgomery. Bruno drove in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the sixth off Mateo.

Zych allowed Guevara’s sacrifice in the fifth and overall would allow just one unearned run over two and 2/3 innings. He also allowed two hits while limiting the Biscuits to one run in his first appearance since returning from the disabled list.

Zach Cates followed Zych out of the bullpen and pitched two scoreless innings. He also walked and struck out one between the seventh and eighth.

Jeff Lorick worked the ninth and struck out one while retiring the side in order.
